I’ve just realised that Sooty & Sweep from the Sooty show, with Harry Corbett (1955-1975) or Matthew Corbett (1976-1992) both have Sweeps festival related names.

Sweep, as in chimney sweep. Sooty as in soot, the black substance removed when sweeping chimneys.

I’m not sure where Soo fits in to all this.

Sooty was in fact a mute. Vicky has a mute for her French horn.

Along with our French horn, we will be appearing at The Sweeps festival tomorrow (Saturday 5th May). At 1.30pm in the castle grounds and at The Singapora Lounge around 10pm.

One hundred and sixteen

As everyone around me buckled and fell to the forces of the never ending struggle (got drunk lots), I decided to stop drinking.

It started off as a month.
Then two months.
Then three.
Then I got ill.
By default I added another 3 and a bit weeks to my marathon dry patch.

On the 117th day, I decided to have a beer. I didn’t enjoy it but I didn’t not enjoy it. It was just there.

I feel I have brought back the control.
Mainly though, I am healthier.

I’ve dropped two trouser sizes and about a stone in weight.
Plus I had a haircut.

And I’m addicted to tea.
Which is awesome.

Now, every time I see somebody even sniff so much as a wine gum, I think they are an alcoholic.

I am also about 6ft taller, as I sit atop this horse.
Way up high.
It’s my horse and I’m on it.
Yes, I’m on my high horse.
You filthy drunkards.

We didn’t get to play Oxford Folk Weekend…

The band were having a sad day yesterday, as we were unable to play at Oxford Folk Weekend due to Marf being proper ill. When I say ‘proper ill’ I mean it. Not only was he even more confused than usual, he couldn’t see out of one of his eyes. Bleurgh.

I would include a photograph for you, so you can see how ill he is, but its too shocking. So instead I’ve included this rather charming photo of a puppy:

Massive apologies for anyone who went to see us and to the festival. But I promise you it was the right decision (Marf would definitely have had to do the whole gig lying down, heavily drugged and without singing or playing).

*We’re working hard to get Marf back up and running this week – and we’re really looking forward to playing the Man of Kent in Rochester on Wednesday 25th. Come along if you can – its a brilliant pub with awesome beers and great people. Marf might still have a red eye, so you can see it then.

If we had a penny every time somebody left or joined Los Salvadores, we’d have 18p.

With that 18p we would buy a Milky Way. Or perhaps a box of matches. It would all depend on our mood on that given day.

However, we don’t have that 18p. Which is a shame.

What we do have is some news that goes some way towards making up for the financial loss we have hypothetically suffered.

For a few weeks now we have been rehearsing with a cello player called Liv. For those of you in the know, she used to rock out in The 286.

We think it is all sounding lovely. The lower tones of the cello have filled out some thinner bits of songs and is letting us make some nice arrangements. We are basically an orchestra now.

However, what this does mean is that there are now more females than males in Los Salvadores for the first time ever. This means productivity at rehearsal is now at an all time low.

I have compiled a chart to illustrate this. As you can see, there are two very obvious trends occurring. As the number of females in the band increases, so does the amount of time spent talking nonsense. Similarly, as the number of males decreases, so does the overall productivity.

One statement can summarize these phenomena:
Girls smell.
